In the great state of California, there are several counties. Lassen County stakes its claim in the northeastern part of the state. Lassen got its start on April 1, 1864. It is comprised of parts of the Shasta and Plumas Counties. The county was named for Peter Lassen who was Danish American. He was a jack of all trades with jobs as a blacksmith, rancher, and prospector. Mount Lassen, a volcanic peak, can also take credit for the name.
Lassen County only has one incorporated city and that just so happens to be its county seat. The city is Susanville. Other cities and towns include Bieber, Doyle, Litchfield, Milford, Termo, and Westwood. There are 4 national forest with parts that are located in Lassen County. They are Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, and Toiyabe.
In the year 2000, the population was just under 34,000. Less than 7,000 families live in the county. The majority of residents are white with over fifty percent of married couples living together. Household incomes were in the upper thirty thousand dollar range while 14 percent of the population could be counted as below the poverty line.
Lassen County is an outdoor lover's dream. There is the vast Sierra Valley Mountain Range. The climate is pleasing to everyone with warm days, cool nights, summers that do not get too warm and winters that stay in the 40's. In Lassen visitors can hunt, fish, ski, go horseback riding, take hikes in the shoe, and stay at resorts during the wintertime.
