Colleges In Shasta County

Shasta County is a great location for families and those looking to build a family. The county has activities year round, colleges for continuing education and reasonably priced rental agreements. The median rental rate tops the scales at a mere 700 dollars per month. The scenery is worth that alone. Everyone can enjoy a trip or extended living situation in Shasta County.

Shasta was one of the original counties that were founded in the state of California. This particular county was founded in 1850 and some of its land was actually given to other counties in California like Siskiyou and Tehama. Mount Shasta is the county’s namesake as the county was named for the English equivalent for the tribe that once inhabited those mountains. Mount Shasta’s peak can still be seen from Shasta County as they now reside in Siskiyou County.

Shasta County’s location also puts it close to the Sacramento Valley and the southern part of the Cascade Range. Its county seat is Redding. That particular city is one of the largest in California, north of the biggest one: Sacramento.

The annual events in Shasta County start in April and go through into the month of October. In April, you can enjoy Kool April Nights, which is a classic car show. Then move into May to join activities like Rodeo Week, Art Fair and Fiddler’s Jamboree, the Whiskeytown Regatta and the Watershed Festival. There is a festival for everyone.

In June, there is an air show and the county fair in Shasta County. July, of course, brings 4th of July festivities and an event called Burney Basin Days. September brings the Intermountain Fair and the Stillwater Pow Wow. Big Bike Weekend ends it all in October just in time for the holidays.

For tourists Shasta County offers plenty of must see sights. Shasta Lake, Lassen Peak, and the Sundial Bridge are among some of the top places to visit. Shasta County is full of vast forests that include the likes of Douglas fir, mixed oak woodland and mixed conifer oak woodland. If trees are your favorites then Shasta can show you White-bark pine, California black oak, and California Buckeye.

Other places of interest include Lassen Volcanic National Park, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Hat Creek Radio Observatory, and the Iron Mountain Mine. The latter holds the title of most toxic waste site in the entire nation.

The politics of Shasta were once all democratic. Times have since changed since Jimmy Carter won office in 1976. Today Shasta County chooses to go with the Republican side in elections that include both presidential and congressional votes. When proposition 8 was put on the table to amend the California Constitution for same sex marriage the vote was nearly 70 percent.

Within Shasta County, there are 4 colleges/universities. They include Shasta College, Simpson University, National University, and Shasta Bible College. There are various schools for younger scholars too. Visit Redding, Anderson, Shingletown, or Millville in Shasta County today and make one of Shasta’s cities or towns a place that you can call home.
