Tuolumne County is located within the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in California. While it looks hard to pronounce it is actually quite simple. It is pronounced like the phrase, “to all of me” and the N is silent. The county was created in 1850 as one of the original counties when California entered into statehood. Before this Tuolumne was known as Oro County.

Natural beauty is abundant in Tuolumne County. The northern half of Yosemite National Park is located here. The Stanislaus National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management and several Indian reservations are located here as well. The landform Table Mountain can also be found in Tuolumne County. Biking, sight seeing and nature walks are popular here. Various cities and towns here include Chinese Camp, East Sonora, Jamestown, Sierra Village and Strawberry.

Tuolumne County is full of history, art, culture and education. Visitors have many exciting events to enjoy. The Yosemite Community College District is located here. There is an annual Christmas parade with floats, live music, food and the one and only Mr. and Mrs. Claus. There are various libraries and museums to visit and learn about the history of Tuolumne County.

Living in Tuolumne County is a small community with less than 57,000 residents. You have affordable housing with Columbia Historic State Park and Yosemite. The politics in the county lean towards the Republican side in both congressional and presidential elections. 2008 was a close race in Tuolumne. John McCain received 14,988 votes while Barack Obama received 11,532 votes. Obama won.

In Tuolumne, the predominant race is white with close to 14,250 families residing in the area. The rate of married couples living in the county is 54.4 percent and median income per household is 38,725. For families it is 44,327 and per capita is just over twenty one thousand. Almost 12 percent of the entire county is below the poverty line.

Traveling to, from and around Tuolumne is easy with a variety of options. There are 3 major highways: California State Route 49, 108 and 120. Public transportation includes bus routes from Sonora to most of the rest of the county. The Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System, YARTS, serves a portion of Yosemite National Park. Two airports exist in Tuolumne County. They are Columbia Airport and Pine Mountain Lake Airport.
