Colleges In Plumas County

Plumas County has a prime location in the state of California. It is located within the mountain range called the Sierra Nevada. The county gets its name from the Spanish words for the Feather River. Rio de las Plumas are the words and the river actually does run through the county. The name came to stick because of all the branches of the Feather River that originated from the mountains.

The county is quite small compared to others that are in the state of California. Its size was less than 21,000 people in the year 2000. This is mainly because the only incorporated city is Portola. Plumas does has a county seat known as Quincy and the other towns are merely a part of Plumas as census designated places or CDP's.

The practices of politics in Plumas County are of the Republican majority. This is said to be true of both congressional and presidential elections. In 1976 Democrat Jimmy Carter won them over, however 1992 won a plurality for Bill Clinton in the county.

The land of Plumas County is 2,613 square miles and 60 of that is water. There are lakes and streams all around, most of which are used for fishing. Plumas is quite popular with tourists because of its outdoor activities and scenery. The Lassen Volcanic National Park has a small part that extends into the northwest corner of the county as well.

For those visiting or enjoying a day out with the family Plumas County has many offerings to keep the day busy. There is the Butterfly valley Botanical Area with abundant plant life and the Elephants Playground, which is in the city of Genesee and has a resemblance of elephant torsos. Other things to do include two special interest areas. One is Little Last Chance Area and the other is Valley Creek. Visit North Valley and Happy Valley too.

The Feather River College is the point of interest for college education in Plumas. It is a 2 year community college located in the city of Quincy. To go hand in hand with journalism majors there are 4 local newspaper in Plumas County every Wednesday except on holidays. The news source has been up and running since 1866 and is called Feather Publishing Company.

Sports are a big deal in Plumas. The Feather River College has a team called the Golden Eagles and they are one of the top ranked junior colleges in northern California. If you are looking for history Plumas County does not disappoint either. Portola is a town that has the Western Pacific Railroad Museum. It is one of the largest in North America and brings in tourists from all over. Another city, Chester, has the Collins Pine Museum for education plus history about the Collins Pine Company and logging in the city.
