Colleges In Stanislaus County

Stanislaus County is a home buyer’s dream. Its population is moderately sized with a census count of 510,000 in 2008. It also provides affordable housing for those who work around the state of California. Stanislaus County is located in the Central Valley of California and even people who work in the San Francisco Bay Area are willing to commute to and from Stanislaus because of the affordability.

Modesto is the county seat for Stanislaus County. The founding for the county started in 1854 and the county was actually founded from pieces of Tuolumne County. Stanislaus got its name from the river of the same name, which was discovered in 1806. Gabriel Moraga is the man responsible for discovering the river. The river was later renamed Rio Estanislao for a native American chief. That was his baptismal name and the Spanish version was Stanislaus.

Even today, the residents of Stanislaus debate over the pronunciation of the county. Some consider the county to be pronounced it with the second “s” being silent. That would be the Spanish form. Others believe that the second “s” was to be pronounced and the emphasis would be on the second syllable. That is said to be that way because the word is German derived and a traditional man’s name.

The Stanislaus environment is full of endangered species. The Beaked Clarkia and Colusa Grass both can be found in regions that are located in the county. The San Joaquin River provides trade and travel for those in Stanislaus. Cities like Patterson and Newman have become bedroom communities for weary travelers and others like Westley have remained untouched and its close proximity to the river keeps it as a farming community.

In Stanislaus, agriculture is key for the survival of the county. It is the number two money maker. Wine grapes are the number one so if you are a wine lover a trip to Stanislaus will keep you in good company. Also with your wine, you can read The Modesto Bee, which is the local, daily newspaper.

If you are looking for education then look no further than Stanislaus and the city of Modesto. This particular city has a junior college. There is also California State University-Stanislaus. Residents wanting to learn can also visit the county farm bureau and the county law library.

The Stanislaus County Fair is a tradition, a family event and one that should not be missed. There is live music, car shows, exhibits, carnival rides and all the fair treats that you can eat. The fair occurs annually and is held in Turlock, California.

Other cities in Stanislaus County include Ceres, Newman, Oakdale, Waterford and others. Take the Stanislaus Regional Transit (StaRT) and the Modesto Area Express (MAX) to travel around the county. The MAX can even connect with the BART and Altamont Commuter Express fro further traveling. Greyhound runs in Modesto and Turlock while Amtrak makes stops in Denair. Local buses run in Ceres, Oakdale and Turlock and Riverbank.

Stanislaus is a great county, however you pronounce it.
